Environmental Impact of Arabian Pearl Culture in Qatar

Pearl diving and oyster harvesting have been part of Qatar’s cultural heritage for centuries, once forming the backbone of the region’s economy. The Qatar Pearl Legacy Project (QPLP) continues this tradition with the establishment of the country’s only Arabian pearl farming operation.

Our assessment examined the impact of pearl farming and wild oyster collection on local marine habitats, evaluating environmental effects and identifying sustainable practices to ensure that pearl production can continue without harming the ecosystem.
